Risk of Diabetes

Saturday, May 1, 2010

As I encounter of my daily activity at work. Different illness I have discovered through patient experience and the people I met everyday. My late patient suffered a high level of diabetes. As a caregiver by experience, I attended some seminars to widen my knowledge in health and care.

From the health care seminar  I was attended few years ago sponsored by my manpower agency. They discuss on how and what can we do to reduce the risk. In any circumstances, the Dr. said, we cannot change all factor but we can lower the risk of diabetes.

There are two types of diabetes. Type 1 diabetes occurs when the body does not make a hormone called insulin. Insulin helps the body use glucose a form of sugar for energy. People with type 2 diabetes either do not have enough insulin or their cells ignore the insulin they have. Nearly 95% of people with diabetes have type 2 diabetes.

Obesity is the single most important risk factor for type 2 diabetes.

Age is also the risk for type 2 diabetes. Half of all the people diagnosed with diabetes are over 55. Although , you can't change your age, but you can work on the risk factor if you are 45 years of age.

Family history, although you can't change your family either, it is important for you and your doctor know what runs in the family. Having 1 relative with diabetes, double your chances of diabetes, and having 2 relatives with diabetes, quadruplets your chances. So, tell your doctor if anyone in your family has diabetes.

Multiple risk factor, is the risk of developing type 2 diabetes increases with the number of risk factors you have. If you have 2 or more risk factor you should talk to your doctor about how or prevent type two diabetes.
